Art let out a low whistle. “I haven’t seen you bring flowers to a woman in a long time.”
“It’s been a long time. That’s a fact,” Zeke said.
“Look, Zeke, you can tell me if you’re interested in Andi.”
“I know, Dad.”
He didn’t know how to respond. He was getting serious, but he didn’t know about Andi. With his back to his dad, he said, “I like her for lots of reasons, Dad. I think she likes me, too. That’s all I can say right now.”
Art let out a soft grunt. “So, I suppose you’re going to want me to move out, huh?”
“Move out? Why would you even say such a thing?” For a few seconds, Zeke assumed his dad was joking.
“I’m not going to hang around and get in the way.” Art turned the page and slapped the middle to straighten the fold. “If you and Andi get serious, you won’t want to be bothered with me.”
Zeke pushed the flowers away and planted his palms on the table, determined to stay calm and not overreact to this nonsense. “Is that really what you think, Dad?”
Art flapped his hand toward the door. “You go on and get outta here.”
“Not just yet,” Zeke said, moving closer to him. “You do know I’m always here for you, right?”
“Until now. I see the way you look at Andi. You two always have your heads together chewing over something. It’s all about that boat. Now you’re going out.” He let the newspaper drop to his lap. “How do I know you won’t just take off?”
Zeke’s body was buzzed. Disbelief, anger, confusion. Resentment, usually mild and easy to handle, didn’t feel so benign. “Because I never have.”
His words reverberated through the room. He stayed by the table, but looked squarely at his dad, whose features softened.
“You better go right now. Don’t want to be late.” Art picked up the newspaper again.
