Excerpt:
“Look ok?” I ask.
Tyler turns around and eyes me head to toe. “No.”
I look down, trying to find what’s out of place.
“You look beautiful.”
My eyes climb back to his. Beautiful.
He called me beautiful.
“Thanks,” I whisper and grab my bag from the floor.
We quietly walk in the direction of the splash zone and bridge. The boat coasts down the hill and a moment later a huge wave covers the bridge and half the walkway. I give the wet cement a wide berth to get around it.
A teenage couple plays a frog game. You have to catapult the frog to land on a lily pad in the middle of the pond. The boy smiles at his girl and she slaps the metal button sending the frog well over the mini pond.
When I was younger, and with my ex, we went to a carnival where we played a milk jug game. I had no aim, still don’t, but he wouldn’t win me anything. He’s only ever called me hot and pretty, unless he was apologizing or horny. Then the flowery adjectives flowed like sweet cherry wine from Timber’s barrels back home.
I spin, facing Tyler with a renewed, something. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.
“Why did you call me beautiful?” I shout. His mouth opens and closes in shock and then his eyes bounce from mine to passersby and back again. “Well?” I ask, completely aware that I’m making a stupid scene, but I feel crazy.
“You are beautiful,” he says, a confused look plastered on his face.
I glare at him. “You don’t know me from Adam. How do you know I’m beautiful?”
He grabs my hand and pulls me to an unoccupied bench.
“You are beautiful, Breeze,” he says again, with something different in his tone. “It’s a compliment.”
“Of all the adjectives you could have used, why did you choose beautiful?”
“Why can’t you accept a compliment without a fight?” Aggravation colors his tone now.
“Why do you always answer a question with a question?” My anger crests and something inside me snaps. Before I say something I’ll regret, I storm away from him in hunt of my family.
He rushes to follow me and tugs my arm to get me to stop. “Breeze, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to offend you.” He blows out a breath. “Being beautiful is more than just appearance—”
“You don’t know me—”
“Anyone who cries at seeing a mountain lion and cuddles a Rottweiler in her sleep and dances as the sun comes up,” his voice gets quieter, “and looks adorable in my shirt like you, can’t be anything but beautiful. My place will never be to damage you.”
I close my eyes. My brain is so scrambled.
“I’m sorry,” I say with a small sigh. “I’m fucking crazy.”
His thumb touches my cheek ever so gently before he grabs my hand. “Crazy is fun. Come on, let’s go find everyone and have more fun.”
I let him tug me through the crowds. I have zero idea where we need to go anyway.
Tyler is a new force. He’s different. I hardly know him. Hell, I don’t even know his last name. Crazy is wanting to know more about him. Crazy is fighting with him in the middle of an amusement park. He makes me crazy.
Crazier. Right. I am Breeze Martins after all. Can’t forget that.
