Chapter One, Part 7

Perhaps Evan’s reluctance sprang from a new source. Rowena softened her voice. “She can still love and honor your father’s memory even if she remarries.”
He murmured, “I know.”
Motionless and enigmatic, he eyed their parents. What thoughts went on in his head? Before he left for the war, she would have known. Now? Now, he was a puzzle. If she put all the pieces back together, she might find a different picture than the one she knew years ago.
Perhaps she was pushing too hard. In a near whisper, she said, “Will you at least think about it?”
His eyes widened in mock surprise. “You aren’t going to leap in with both feet and worry about the consequences later?”
“Not in this,” Rowena said seriously. “I want your full support because this concerns you, as well. After all, if this plan works, Papa would be your stepfather, as well as your distant cousin.” 
He lifted one brow. “Which would make us stepbrother and stepsister, as well as cousins.”
“A convoluted family tree, to be sure.”
“I’ve seen worse.” The tiniest hint of a smile curved his mouth.
“Then you’ll consider it?”
He looked at her, and something in his expression shifted, softened. “I will.”
She pressed her hands together to prevent herself from clapping them. “Thank you.”
“We should return.” He offered his arm. 
She took his arm and ignored the shiver in her limbs. Instead, she pictured her gentle, lonely papa with Evan’s sweet and charming mother. With that image in her mind and her best friend on her arm, even if he was a shadow of his former self, Rowena practically danced inside.
